The purpose of this research report was to acknowledge and showcase the design identity as well as the working philosophy that designers adopted for their work. The information obtained from this study was additionally used to expand and develop a better understanding of particular areas of interest within a design on a personal level. Consequently allowing individuals to manifest a design philosophy of their own in correlation to their design interests and potential career paths.
For this study, the 'UNCINO' collection was selected amongst the many other designers which sparked my curiosity. This particular series of products is a collection of chairs and stools designed by Ronan & Erwan BOUROULLEC. It was a project released in 2014 in collaboration with the Italian company 'Mattiazzi’. The showcased series is a set of primitive chairs, composed of a few numerically sculpted pieces of wood, held and supported by metal rods.
It combines both Mattiazi's dedicated handcraftsmanship and Bouroullec's modern minimalist approach to design. Having previously collaborated on various projects, Mattiazi returned once again to the French brothers with the intention of creating a product that would offer a new take on raw and pure minimalism in design. Although the released series are formally recognized as task chairs, this particular collection is suited to a range of applications and environments.
The intentions behind the concept, material selection, and manufacturing process were outlined as well as intricately broken down into sections to offer readers how a series of batch-produced products rise from rough prototypical sketches.
